Here they are, the Farm Gang, consisting of the Easley and Schafer clan. This is the 5th year that the two families have welcomed our disabled Veterans to a 4-day annual turkey hunt on 440 beautiful acres of land. The families provide all the meals, guides, and everything else from the ground blinds to cleaning the harvested turkeys. This is done every year for those disabled Veterans participating in this annual event. It doesn’t matter to the Farm Gang if the Veterans are in a wheelchair, use a walker, or have a cane because they are going to get the Veterans out to the blind and set everything up for them. They will also call the toms with the hope of giving the disabled Veterans a chance to do something they thought they’d never be able to do again – hunt outdoors for a turkey!
The Veterans hunt Thursday afternoon and all day Friday, and then we have a closing out bash Saturday afternoon into the early evening. At the bash we exchange gifts, make a few presentations, and talk about our Veterans and all they did for our country. We conclude the bash with a great meal, handshakes, and hugs. The Veterans then drive to their rooms at the Motor Inn in Westfield, get a good night’s sleep, have breakfast the next morning, and then head for home after this. The respect that the Farm Gang shows our disabled Veterans goes beyond words. It matters not what they say, but how they say it. You not only hear them, but you feel the respect they have for our Veterans.
God bless and watch over them until next year.
