Here is a photo of the start of our Saturday bash. The turkey hunt is over and now it’s time to have some fun! Each year I give out what we call a “King Turkey Hat.” To earn the hat, the Veteran must hunt hard all three days, unless they get their turkey early, and shoot the largest turkey; or like during a hunt two years ago, one of our Veterans shot a bearded hen (a legal turkey). Every year I give out the “King Turkey Hat” (this year it went to Brian), I hear a little moaning and groaning because they all didn’t get a hat. I thought about it and decided, “Hey, why not give them all a hat!” Well, there you are! Everyone got a hat! There wasn’t any moaning or groaning this year! You can tell by their smiles that it was the right thing to do. The Veterans in this photo from left to right are: Pat Horvath, Ervin Mulkey, Jason Buss, Brian Wellsfry, and Will Carlson. That’s what this event is all about – not just shooting a turkey but sharing the days with the Farm Gang and each other. The hunt is one thing, but the camaraderie is what it’s all about.
Veterans Afield U.A. was formed to give our disabled Veterans an opportunity to get outdoors and do the things they thought they would never be able to do again.
